As we head into the new year, the Daily News feature critics and staff look ahead
By Janice Paine:
High season in Florida means museums and galleries shift into high gear. This time of year, you can be sure that if they’ve got it, they’re going to take it out for a spin. From the Naples Museum of Art’s mini-retrospective of Pablo Picasso’s work to a crowd-pleasing extravaganza of sculpted jewelry by artist Alexander Calder in West Palm Beach, it’s pedal to the metal for area art presenters.
But keep an eye out for more eccentric offerings, too. Last winter, the hottest under-the-radar event was a retro-1960s art happening called “Peace and Flambé.” Sculptor Lawrence Voytek and painter/digital artist Michael St. Amand set up a temporary exhibit in a Naples hair salon and celebrated it with a free-flowing indoor/outdoor reception that included performances by fire dancers and avant-garde flutist Kat Epple. They’re planning to reprise the event in January, this time in Ft. Myers. So dig out your tie-dye duds, find that peace medallion hidden in the bottom of your bureau drawer, and head for the most potentially combustible art event of the season.
“Peace and Flambé: An Art Happening,” opening reception at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Sydney and Berne Davis Art Center and Space 39 Gallery, 39 Patio de Leon, Ft. Myers. Admission is free.
Attendees are encouraged to dress according to the theme: peace or flambé. But be warned: Voytek says the evening is also Bikers Night in downtown Ft. Myers. Vroom!
